Reference Support Librarian, Winstead PC, Austin

This position reports directly to the Director of Library & Information Resources and receives supervision from the office manager. This position is primarily responsible in providing quality day-to-day library services to the firm’s library’s users in his/her assigned office, and when necessary Firm-wide.

Duties and Responsibilities

1.     Oversees the daily operations within his/her assigned office. Has knowledge of library’s general and location-specific shelving practices, including any specialized collections. Organizes the bi-annual efforts to reorganize and purge the library collection, including moving shelves, books and preparing materials for storage. Duties also include inventory control and tracking library materials.

2.     Files and reshelves incoming periodicals, books, articles and other publications according to established library procedures.

3.     Processes incoming research/reference requests and conducts complete and thorough research, using library resource and informational tools. Participates in ready referencing tasks which include working the reference desk, consulting with library users and responding to e-mail requests. Ensures compliance with licensing and electronic subscriptions when conducting research. Able to produce client billable research.

4.     Provides instruction and optimizes attorney and staff use of information resources. Duties include development of training modules, marketing of training events, teaching various topics and locating speakers from the vendor communities. Arranges educational events with conference services or the information technical support personnel.

5.     Participates in meetings where educational materials or marketing ideas are conceptualized and developed into strategies or user guides. Develops electronic documents, library guides, fact finders, bibliographies, signage, and other literature or products to facilitate access to the library collection or informational resources. Conducts library tours and orientations.

6.     Produces photocopies of requested materials from periodicals, books, articles and other publications, in compliance with U.S. copyright laws and provides reference and research.

7.     Contributes to staff meetings, sharing new search techniques, current technologies or current awareness issues and participates in problem-solving discussions.

8.     Represents the Library and Information Resource Department in appropriate internal and external meetings.

9.     Participates in professional library organizations meetings, industry meetings and vendor training opportunities to enhance skillsets, to be informed of current events and monitor industry changes.

10.  Prepares monthly accountability report for submission to the Director.

11.  Assists with special projects and other tasks as may be assigned.

Requirements

1.     To be successful in this position requires the incumbent to possess a Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an accredited library school or the equivalent plus a minimum two years experience in a law firm or corporate law library. Thorough knowledge of print and online legal and non-legal sources required, including strong Westlaw, LexisNexis and electronics research skills. In addition, he/she should possess fundamental knowledge of library materials, as related to the practice of law and standard library operations

2.     The incumbent must be proficient in conducting on-line searches, using at least two of the current search services now available in the library. Must also be familiar with the use of LotusNotes, WordPerfect and/or Microsoft Word software and with database management techniques. Proven abilities to meet deadlines, work productively in a fast paced environment, and work both independently and as a part of a team. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with customer service orientation is must.

3.     This position requires the ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time; to be able to use hands and fingers to grip, handle and feel objects, tools or controls; to speak and hear and see; as well as to be able to reach with hands and arms and to occasionally walk, stoop, kneel and crouch; and to lift objects weighing up to 10 lbs. He/she must also have the ability to handle multiple tasks and work well under pressure.

Supervision Received and Given: Oral and written instructions are received from the Director of Library and Information Resources. There are no supervisory duties associated with this position.
