Have you read the articles? The new associates getting $75,000 not to show up to work for a year? The sixth year associate getting $80,000 to travel the world? Yep, I thought you had. Because it’s hard to read that lawyers are facing a grim job market and private law firm librarians are being hit the hardest by layoffs in light of stories such as these.
That, of course, is not even counting the effect on a personal level if one has been laid off, by a law firm or some other institution. Or if one has had to make compromises in light of the economy, whether as a director or as a job seeker or in some other way. The point of this blog is not to become a pity party or a sobfest. It is intended to be professional. However, that remains the background to an issue that is nothing but personal. It is hard to lose a job. It is hard to question career goals in light of personal values and figure out what to do next. But those are the issues that are the most important. This is what I’m doing to try and help both myself and the profession. What I’m really interested in is what are you doing to make it through?
