Business Intelligence Librarian, McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP, D.C.

McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP is an international law firm of 475 attorneys and public policy advisors. The firm provides business solutions in the areas of environmental regulation, international law, public policy and regulatory affairs, corporate law, government contracts, intellectual property and technology, complex litigation, real estate, energy and finance. Currently, MLA has an opening for a Business Intelligence Librarian. The Business Intelligence Librarian, under the supervision of the Director of Library Services, works closely with Marketing Department personnel and firm attorneys to coordinate and conduct specialized research and analysis of companies, industries, markets and competitors, using a comprehensive variety of print and online resources in the areas of business, industry and other subjects for marketing and business development.

Essential Duties and Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Research a wide variety of business, industry and competitive intelligence data for Marketing Department personnel and firm attorneys in accordance with requested specifications and research budget guidelines, especially Dossier reports, spreadsheet lists, and other projects. Prepare analysis of research results and forward to appropriate firm personnel.
  2. Evaluate business/competitive intelligence resources based on quality, authenticity, accuracy and cost. Select appropriate internal and external print resources, online databases and Web sites in response to business development research needs.
  3. As requested by Marketing Department personnel and firm attorneys, establish individual and group alerts for business development purposes with available competitive intelligence resources. Continually monitor sources for relevance, effectiveness and timely delivery of information. Ensure comprehensive coverage of potential business development matters.
  4. In conjunction with this effort, cultivate list of resources such as library subscriptions, newsfeeds, Web sites, trade journals, discussion lists and other similar research tools to be used for monitoring items that involve the firm, its clients, and the legal industry.
  5. Improve standardized formats for delivering business information requests.
  6. Attend Marketing Department meetings as required to report on requests received from legal and Marketing personnel and status of the requests. Act as liaison between Marketing Department and Library personnel.
  7. Provide reference assistance to legal staff as scheduled.  Consult with legal staff regarding research needs. Conduct research using various print, on-line, and database resources. Ensure any research costs are appropriately charged and are in compliance with budget guidelines.
  8. Evaluate ways to improve and communicate library services to legal staff and Marketing Department personnel.
  9. Keep metrics on work completed for monthly and annual reports.
  10. Maintain confidentiality regarding firm matters.
  11. Perform various other duties as assigned.

Experience / Education

Requires Masters of Library Science degree and a minimum of three years of business/competitive intelligence research experience, plus knowledge of legal research.

  • Requires thorough knowledge of business/competitive intelligence print and electronic sources and marketing and business technical terms in order to meet business development needs in a cost-effective and timely manner.
  • Must possess skills to research and analyze business, industry and competitive intelligence sources in a wide variety of areas relating to the legal environment and integrating relevant information for business development purposes.
  • Requires ability to devise the best research strategy, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and present the information in a clear and logical manner.
  • Must be able to read, analyze and interpret qualitative and quantitative marketing data.
  • Demonstrates excellent research skills, including meticulous attention to detail and patience to achieve successful research results.
  • Must be able to synthesize, interpret and summarize on-line research and print media for marketing research purposes.
  • Requires strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, including excellent verbal and written ability.
  • Must possess technical skills to create professional reports using applications such as Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple competing tasks and demands, provide high levels of customer service and maintain a professional demeanor under stress.
  • Requires strong interpersonal and team skills and an ability to work independently.

Hardware / Software

  • Ability to use and analyze online databases and resources such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, West Monitor, Capital IQ, Hoovers, PACER and the Internet
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office and other presentation software
