The Georgetown University Law Center is currently collecting materials in a variety of formats for the purpose of writing and publishing a biography of a federal court judge. The Legal Biography Project Archivist will be responsible for the organization, preservation and management of the materials forming this collection. Under the direct supervision of the Special Collections Librarian the Legal Biography Project Archivist’s specific responsibilities are:
Records Management, Organization, Preservation, and Access – (Expected duration of 18 Months)
Assist in organizing, digitizing and preserving, and providing appropriate access to materials in a variety of formats on the subject of the biography. These tasks include:
- Using knowledge of records management, the Legal Biography Project Archivist will create an organizational structure for all the materials and records collected that will support the research and writing of this biography.
- Create and maintain a web-based database of all records and materials and ensure accessibility to and longevity of records, within a secure context for restricted access.
- Use appropriate preservation methods while processing materials.
- Use professional judgment to digitize materials as appropriate for this project.
- Provide the biographers with access to the materials and assist as needed in the research of the legal biography.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Required
- Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science, with a concentration in law librarianship and/or archives and manuscript collections OR
- Master’s degree in Humanities or the Social Sciences, with an Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA) Certification in Archives.
Preferred
- Juris Doctor, with interest in constitutional law.
- Second Master’s degree in Humanities or the Social Sciences.
- Experience in office records management, manuscripts and/or archives collections, and database management.
