Cataloger, Government Agency, VA

Library Associates Companies (LAC) seeks a Cataloger to work under a one-year contract with a government agency located in Arlington, Virginia, subject to award, to begin July 1, 2009. Work must be done on-site, no telecommuting.

Responsibilities:

  1. Create new records for legal publications, U.S. Government publications, and other related materials (both serials and monographs) for various media types. The cataloging information must be verified assuring that the bibliographic description conforms to current national and local procedures, and contains the most recent form of Library of Congress subject headings.
  2. Identify and solve cataloging problems. Select Library of Congress call numbers so that the books relate to the subject area on the self.
  3. Edit records so that bibliographic descriptions conform to current standards. Ensure that the catalog record is correct in terms of the most recent rules, input standard and local procedures.
  4. Add barcodes to each publication for entry into the library’s online catalog.
  5. Keep complete statistics on the number of titles and volumes catalogued originally, the number of existing records edited and/or re-catalogued, the number of barcodes affixed to each publication, etc.


Requirements:

  • MLS required
  • Additional work experience as a Cataloger beyond MLS preferred
  • Knowledge of current AACR and LC Classification Schedules
  • Must be able to complete and pass a government-administered background investigation
