I thought this program was wonderful! However, I might be a little biased. Mark Estes was moderator, while Joan Axeleroth, Dina Driefuerst and I presented.
Joan had a fabulous powerpoint presentation with tons of helpful advice. She has generously allowed me to share it with you! AALL_CareerChange_Axelroth
Dina has changed careers many times so had tons of advice for those doing so or contemplating doing so. Her advice included:
- you only have to get ONE job;
- brainstorm your dream job;
- you can create your own opportunity, but first you must do your homework;
- be positive and practical (this was an overall theme of Dina’s presentation);
- keep connections active and remain current;
- remain optimistic.
In comparison to the previous two beautiful ducks, I felt a little like an awkward teenage duck on the side of the pond since I am still mid-career change. I talked about developing this blog, which has been and remains a fabulous experience. The things I was worried about in the beginning, finding the right tone and finding enough to post about, have not been problems. My advice to those who are still looking for a new job echo the Law Librarians of Leisure Guide to Being Unemployed.
One of the audience participants, Gail, had also had a wonderful suggestion. She said to make a list of 20 good contacts and stay in touch with them on a rotational basis to keep your network strong. Mark Estes advised to always think, in your current job, that you have to work for it. Never assume that you do not.
If anyone else was there and would like to add anything, please feel free!
