The toll of being unemployed

A rather depressing but true account from the NY Times of four people who are the “ultimate embodiment of pessimism as this recession wears on.”

I know there are law librarians out there in this same position. I feel I could try to offer comfort but it would be just words. I suppose I linked to this article so you would know you’re not alone.

  1. *SIGH*

No one can understand how horrific what these people are going through is except people who are in the same position.

But…I have to say that I strongly disagree with what they’re doing. As hard and painful and soul-sucking it is to apply and apply and get interviewed and not get the job in the end, I don’t think they should give up so completely as they have. I’m sure some will disagree with me but I really don’t think they should let this beat them down that badly. Even if you’re down, apply. Even if you think you have no chance in hell of getting the job, go to the interview. Even if you don’t know what’s going to happen, KEEP TRYING. You never know when something could work out, but if you don’t kept trying, nothing will work out.

My philosophy is that if you try, you may have a low chance of getting what you’re trying for. If you don’t try, you have NO chance of getting what you’re trying for.

And we can agree that a low chance is better than no chance, can’t we?

    Christine, what do you think?

    • I totally agree with what you’re saying. I’ve tried to emphasize staying positive throughout this whole process because I think it’s really important to remain so. Once a person gets to such a stage of disappointment and discouragement that they can’t function…I’m not sure how easy their path with be to reenter working society. I’m not being judgmental – I’m just stating what I see are the consequences of that.

      • It’s not even the path to re-enter working society thing as much as the fact that they seem to have, I don’t know, let it destroy them somehow?

I frequent another (non-law library) message board and it’s been so shocking and awful to read from some people there how unemployed friends of them have barricaded themselves at home or thought about or committed suicide. It’s so heart-breaking to think that this is what people have now come to. It shouldn’t have to be this way.
