Reference Librarian, Ohio Northern University Law Library, OH

Description: The Reference Librarian will have a variety of duties, including providing reference service, preparing instructional materials, teaching legal research sessions, and coordinating outreach efforts through exhibits and guides. The Reference Librarian serves on the Collection Development Committee and works closely with others to enhance collection use by students and scholars. The Reference Librarian will also have primary responsibility for coordinating our collection assessment projects.

As one of a team of four librarians, the Reference Librarian participates in the evening and weekend reference rotation. Our new librarian will also assist in developing library policies and procedures. Depending on the experience and interests of the candidate, and on the needs of the library, the Reference Librarian will also help co-ordinate or participate in selected administrative and operational functions.

This position should be of interest to someone who wants broad exposure to academic law library services and issues. This position will also provide many opportunities for sophisticated collection assessment work. Candidates who are flexible and interested in assisting with a wide range of duties will be preferred. The position reports to the Director of the Law Library.

Full-time, 12-month tenure-track appointment with academic rank within the Law Library. Position available in November 2009, with a flexible start date. Requirements: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution; JD from an ABA-accredited institution preferred. Experience in an academic law library environment highly desirable. Demonstrated knowledge of legal materials essential. Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, students, and staff. Firm commitment to law librarianship. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and technology skills. Must be able to work independently as well as cooperatively as a member of the law library staff. Ability to meet the requirements for promotion and tenure.

About: Ohio Northern University’s Pettit College of Law is the second oldest law school in Ohio. The law college has approximately 300 full-time day students. Over 30 states are represented in the student body, with 50% of our students coming from outside of Ohio. The law college is approved by the ABA and is a member of AALS.

The Taggart Law Library has over 420,000 volume equivalents with well developed collections in many law-related subjects. Library processes have been completely automated by the installation of all Innovative Interfaces modules. The library is a participant in OhioLINK, a statewide co-operative venture of college and university libraries. Resource sharing is facilitated through the OhioLINK online union catalog and patron-initiated borrowing. The Law Library staff consists of 4 professional librarians, 6 support staff, 1 IT support technician, and approximately 5 FTE in student workers.

Ohio Northern University is a 130-year-old coeducational, residential university related to the United Methodist Church. In addition to Law, the University has Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, and Pharmacy, with a total enrollment of 3,500 students. The University sponsors many cultural events at its excellent performing arts center and maintains a beautifully landscaped campus.
