Director of the Law Library, Saint Louis University School of Law, MO

Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care, and service invites applications for the position of Director of its Law Library. The Director of the Law Library also teaches advanced legal research courses and is a tenured or tenure-track member of the law school faculty. Applicants should hold university degrees in both law and library science from accredited institutions and have substantial experience in law libraries.

Saint Louis University, the first university west of the Mississippi River, is a leading Catholic Jesuit university. The University is dedicated to education, research, health care and service. With its campus in the Midtown arts district of the city of St. Louis, the University enjoys a central location and remains committed to the city. The University educates more than 11,000 students each year. The Carnegie Foundation classifies the University as a Doctoral/Research-Extensive institution.

The School of Law is a graduate division of the University with an independent endowment and a history of strong alumni and community support. The School of Law has held full A.B.A. accreditation continually and has been a member of the Association of American Law Schools since 1924. The Law School has 59 full time faculty members, a student body of approximately 950 distributed between the School of Law?s educationally equivalent full and part time programs. The library is a critical component of the community, supporting both the day to day educational process and the diverse research interests and needs of faculty and students.

Through its three centers, the School of Law offers specialized certificate programs in Health Law, Employment Law and International and Comparative Law. The recent additions of concentrations in Taxation, Business Transactions, Urban Development, Land Use and Environmental Law, Civil Litigation Skills and Criminal Litigation Skills provide students opportunities to design their programs to express their individual interests clearly as an aid to job placement. The Clinical programs have a powerful reputation and play an important role in the local community. The Health Law program enjoys a compelling national reputation. All these programs depend continually upon the library for support.

The Director of the Law Library should be flexible and innovative in increasing support for growing and diversifying research efforts while at the same time having to confront the challenges of limited financial resources. During the early years of his or her tenure, the Director also may anticipate the need for a major reorganization of library in the context of a new or expanded facility. The Director of the Law Library reports directly to the Dean of the Law School and is responsible for all aspects of library operations, including technical services, collection development, public services, long-term and short-term planning, budgeting, hiring and supervision of staff. In consultation with the Dean, the faculty, and the professional staff of the Library, the Director sets library policy. The Director is a member of the University?s Council of Library Directors.

The Library has nine full time and eight part time professional librarians and approximately 10 support staff members. The Law Library’s collection includes some 660,000 volumes and equivalents and ranks 37 among accredited U.S. law schools. The Library has responded to current usage trends and cost efficiencies by shifting resources to electronic collections development while seeking balance with physical resources within the limitations of its more than $2 million annual budget. While the law library remains autonomous, it works cooperatively with the University Library on various projects and shares an integrated online library system with the University Library and the Medical Center. The Law Library is also a selective federal and Missouri government depository.

In addition, the Law Library participates in resource sharing and has been a leader in the Mid-America Law Library Consortium and MOBIUS. Building of cooperative alliances has been and should remain a hallmark of the Law Library.
