The Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library seeks an enthusiastic, experienced, and self-directed reference librarian. Will join a team of reference librarians who provide high-quality, wide-ranging services to all library users. Core duties include front-line reference (about 12 hours per week), research projects for faculty, instructional presentations to law school classes and other groups, and the preparation of materials that enhance access to legal information. Each reference librarian also has some administrative duties – for instance, serving as liaison to online vendors, managing the Library’s website, or coordinating teaching and training. All reference librarians report to and are evaluated by the Associate Dean for Library and Computing Services, Penny Hazelton. The department works on a consensus model and is administered on a day-to-day basis by the Coordinator for Reference Services, Cheryl Nyberg. Librarians are encouraged to be professionally active. Background: Supporting the work of the University of Washington School of Law—one of the top ten public law schools in the country—the Gallagher Law Library is an active and responsive force in the life of the law school.   The School of Law has 56 full-time and 75 part-time faculty, 530 JD students, and 200 LL.M. and Ph.D. students. It hosts several student publications and numerous visiting scholars. Graduate programs include Asian and Comparative Law, Health Law, Intellectual Property Law and Policy, and Tax. The School of Law is in a building that opened in 2003; the Library is spacious and attractive.

The Law Library serves the School of Law faculty, students, staff, and visiting scholars, as well as other members of the university community, the bar, and the general public. The collection includes over 625,000 volumes and the Library is a selective federal depository. The Library has 29 FTE, with 4.2 FTE in the Reference department. The Gallagher Law Library has a strong tradition of service to all users. Law Library staff  also provide on-the-job training to students in the Information School’s top-ranked law librarianship program. In the past year, the Library has implemented QuestionPoint, SharePoint, and WorldCat Local.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides reference service to library patrons, including members of the School of Law and university communities, the bar, and the public; uses online and print sources to answer general and legal reference questions
  • Conducts research for School of Law faculty and staff
  • Prepares materials for and gives research presentations in School of Law courses
  • Prepares written materials, including legal research guides and blog posts
  • Provides instruction and training to a wide variety of other audiences including university students and librarians
  • Continually improves reference and research skills for high-quality service
  • Coaches and trains law librarianship students
  • Works some evening or weekend hours
  • Handles administrative projects and other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • MLIS (or equivalent degree) from an ALA-accredited institution
  • 3+ years of professional law library experience
  • Excellent legal research skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong commitment to service
  • Ability to work in a consensus-driven department as well as independently

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience providing instruction and training
  • JD
