Law Librarian, University of Oregon Law Library, OR

The University of Oregon John E. Jaqua Law Library seeks a user-oriented law librarian for a position dedicated to providing and promoting scholarly services that support the teaching, research, scholarship, and service activities of the law faculty and students.

The Jaqua Law Library maintains over 400,000 volumes and volume equivalents in print, electronic, media, and micro formats, and supports the teaching, research and service activities of the University of Oregon Law School, which has approximately 540 students. The Law Library provides primary and secondary legal materials as well as specialized collections in environmental law, business law, ADR, ocean law, Indian law, and family law. As a key component of the University of Oregon Libraries, Law Library staff members are active partners in improving access to scholarly resources. The Law Library team is composed of 7.0 FTE library faculty, 6.0 FTE support staff members, and numerous student workers.

Duties & Responsibilities: The person in this position works collaboratively with three law-trained reference librarians and several student reference assistants to provide extensive reference, instructional and research services for research-oriented faculty members and students in a technologically advanced information environment. Participates in reference desk rotation (including weekends and possibly evenings) and on-call shifts. Uses specialized subject knowledge and expertise to perform faculty liaison and collection development activities. Oversees the law library’s access services including supervision of the Law Library Manager. Participates in departmental planning. Meets professional development criteria for promotion and retention. Other related duties as assigned. Reports to the Director of the Law Library.

Qualifications: Required: MLS/MLIS and JD degrees from ALA- and ABA-accredited institutions; knowledge of current information technologies and publishing formats, database and Internet searching proficiencies and a mastery of basic legal research sources and techniques using both print and electronic materials; a strong service orientation; interest in working with an active research-oriented faculty; interest in new and emerging technologies; a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation; the ability to work in a collegial and cooperative environment; and excellent oral and written communication skills. Preferred: Reference and/or access services experience in an academic law library; and supervisory experience. The successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.
