The University of Georgia, located in Athens, Georgia, is a Carnegie RU/VH (Research I) institution in the University System of Georgia. The University is the largest and most comprehensive educational institution in Georgia. The main campus is located on 615 acres, approximately 60 miles northeast of Atlanta.
The Alexander Campbell Law Library supports the research needs of the students, faculty, alumni, members of the State Bar of Georgia and any member of the public. In keeping with its status as the oldest and largest public law library in the state, the Alexander Campbell King Law Library at the University of Georgia builds collections for anticipated needs as well as current needs. The Law Library maintains a collection numbering in excess of 500,000 volumes and volume equivalents. The Library exhibits strength in the well-developed collection of foreign and international law designed to support the work of internationally acclaimed scholars who are members of the law faculty, the LL.M. program, the Rusk Center, and the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law. Recent strong ongoing efforts have significantly increased an already exceptional electronic collection. The Law Library was one of the first law schools to create an institutional repository capturing all intellectual output of the Law School for reference. Currently, the Library’s staff consists of 8 full-time librarian positions and 25 full-time (including computing services) support staff positions.
The Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of library operation including administration of strategic planning, hiring, supervision of library staff, collection development, budgeting and implementing technology to support library services. The Director reports directly to the Dean of the Law School. The Director should have knowledge of emerging technologies in their application to libraries. As Director, leadership skills in a collaborative environment, listening skills and clear communication skills will enable the successful completion of initiatives, as the Library moves toward implementation of its strategic plan. Depending on qualifications and interest, the Director may be considered for a faculty position at the School of Law.
Both a J.D. and an M.L.S. from accredited institutions as well as substantial law library administrative experience are required. The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively communicate and work closely with Law Library departments, faculty, students and University personnel. He or she will demonstrate a commitment to involving staff in addressing challenges and solutions and be able to encourage personal investment and ownership in the Library’s mission.
